Is animal cruelty the new slavery?

It’s sad that we; humans kill a lot of animals on daily basis. Mostly for food, and sometimes for sports etc. We are doing this on an evolutionary level—for unnecessary reasons. Animals might feel more pain than we do. This might make you think thrice before chowing down on your next Chick-Fil-A but it might also make you think twice about swatting that spider or  even disciplining your pup. Animals might feel things worse than we do most of the times,  simply because their biological makeup is less advanced than ours.

While remembering the history, it impossible to ignore the historical similarities between cruelty to our ancestors at the time of independence and cruelty the to animals in circuses and food industry today. The mindset that has permitted violence against humans in the past is the same mindset that allows the animal abuse to occur. Just as our ancestors were beaten, exploited, and were treated as slaves, so are the lions, tigers, zebras, camels and other animals used in food industry and circuses. Same as our ancestors had feelings and family so do have animals. In fact, if we look around us, we are an animal too. We are a family! Animals who are forced to perform in circuses are deprived of proper care on the routine basis and  become  sick, depressed, and listless. Many of them develop a neurotic behavior from the abuse and  stress and die a life, shorter than their average lifespan. They spend the majority of their lives in cages or boxcars and are hauled around from one place to another. UK laws require that  animals should be given a good quality of life. But the hardships of transport, cruel training and other problems of circus life makes it impossible.

Many of our ancestors were imprisoned without any cause and spent their lives deprived of basic necessities of life: autonomy, the freedom of choice, and independence. The life which animals are living in circuses and food industry is exactly the same. Animals have no choice when it comes to their living conditions, and they are badly punished if they don’t toe the line. They have no control over any aspect of their own destiny and live the life according to the will of their owners.

Animals don’t ever get used to servitude and they know they are not at the place where they are supposed to be. Those animals who perform stunts at the circuses that they would never do in their rightful homes do so because of fear, not because they want to do. So from this, we  can say that animal cruelty is a new slavery.
